Yesterday I had an opportunity to do a behind-the-scenes tour of the more than 100 year old hotel in the center of Grand Rapids, MI. It was interesting to see the kitchens, laundry and back of the house workings of this Grand Rapids institution. More than 800 people work in this hotel with its 600 rooms, multiple dining and banquet rooms and very traditional gathering spaces.
I was particularly drawn to Cygnus, the restaurant on the 27th floor, recently redecorated with a more modern aesthetic than the rest of the hotel. While I’ve been up to the space during dining hours, I haven’t had a chance to really look at how this space has been transformed. Here’s what caught my eye.
Notice the wonderful boxy light fixtures, lined up in rows creating an orderly ceiling effect.
I loved the red plates on the tables, but even more: take a look at the table covering. I think its that stuff used to keep area rugs from skidding. What a clever way to add texture.
The bar is stunning. Really stunning.
And this sign made me smile. It is posted in the main kitchen in the bowels of the building. Not bad advice.
