One of my favorite things to do in a big city is to throw my camera strap over shoulder and head off on a walk. In Paris, this is called being a flaneur, or walking with no apparent destination in mind. Just meandering.
This blog post will document the interesting stuff that caught my eye on a Flaneur Day in New York City in April.
First, wedding photos. It’s always such fun to see happy couples getting their pictures taken in the Big Apple. I love trying to capture an image or two of these happy occasions.
Wild hair and get ups. Never get tired of trying to spot these. Or people taking selfies. So self-absorbed.
Changes that indicate New World order. These images are a bit sobering. I noted at both the Empire State Building and St. Paul’s Cathedral new barriers on the sidewalks. At first I was a little confused what they were all about but then realized they are there to prevent terrorists/nutcases from driving up onto highly crowded sidewalks and slaughtering people.
The ones by the church are actually nice because they provide a spot to stop and rest.
The love and peace tourist bus provides an ironic background for the black and white patterned barriers in front of the Empire State Building.
Photo Shoots. As a former Fashion Writer for the Grand Rapids Press I am always attracted to a gorgeous model wearing something stunning being photographed on city streets. I know all the work that goes into those projects and appreciate the effort. Wish I could see the outcome.
I also like the fashion store windows—in big cities they are often a work of art.
Hungry for Taco’s anyone? No shortage of innovative Taco Fusion opportunities in New York City.
Buildings. A favorite is the Flatiron Building. The new store called Clara caught my eye. My daughter-in-law is named Clara. Naturally I sent this one to her. Murals and creative painting slow me down to capture the scene.
I took these images on another day at the Museum of Modern Art. A couple of shows kept me entertained and enthralled.
Occasionally I try a self portrait. When I attended a Sante Fe Photography Workshop, in October we were asked to do a self portrait every day. Our instructor said it is a great way to exercise one’s creative muscle.
Two views from the Steelcase Showroom showing how the light changes a photograph. I took these within 15 minutes of each other.
Can’t help but smile when you stroll by this guy.

Aug 13, 2018I love the concept of “flaneur”…will have to remember this when I’m wandering aimlessly. Sometimes it’s just to get outside and breathe fresh air, so perhaps you can’t call that “flaneur” if there is at least some kind of purpose in the walk! Great photos, as always!
