Reposted from December 2014
One of my favorite places to spend a few days during December is New York City. This year’s trip to the Big Apple didn’t disappoint.
Decorations are always fabulous and creative. Store windows are the best. This year I was captivated with Barney’s “skater” in the window and their moving kaleidoscope type constructions. The moving windows of UNIQLO, the trendy Italian store on Fifth Avenue, stopped me for a bit. . They actually move up three floors…….see the bright squares of windows in the photos in the different placements. I noticed that lots of people walked right by without being aware of the moving windows.
This year we went to a Holiday Showhouse on the upper East Side. It was a sneak peak into the lives of the privileged elite and some ideas about decorating. Isn’t the dining room stunning?
I always pop into Saks Fifth Avenue, never tiring of the white branches with the tiny lights on the ceiling. Fun to do a little browsing. The former fashion writer and buyer in me couldn’t help but notice all the black on the markdown racks. Did they overbuy or are New Yorkers tired of their fashion staples?
The most fun at Saks was a display of Rockettes costumes designed by famous designers. I really enjoyed seeing them and marveling at the creativity and pizzazz.

Dec 26, 2014Yep. You would have loved the Showhouse (Holiday House). Lots of interesting design ideas. The Cubist exhibit at the Met was fascinating. I didn’t include in this blog post because no photos were allowed. Hope you can get to see it when you are in NYC in 2015.

Dec 25, 2014My one and only experience of NYC at Christmas time was as a 23 year old new teacher on an ‘art trip’. The Metropolitan, the Cloisters, Moma, NYC at night with huge drops of snow, the shop windows, Forty years of American Painting from the ‘New York School’ on exhibit. It was magical and piques my imagination still.
Thanks for bringing back that memory.

Dec 26, 2014Hi Susan, always love your photo journeys…thanks, as always, for letting your blog readers drool over the Holiday decorations in the Big Apple.Hope you had a lovely Christmas. The only thing missing was the snow but I don’t think I’ll lodge a formal complaint with the weatherman.
