Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas

The Baja

Cabo San Lucas, a friendly and fun resort area on the very tip of the Baja in Mexico is one of those places people like me who live in Michigan and endure long cold winters, crave to visit the end of March and in April.

We are so anxious to see and feel sunlight and to stop having to wear big heavy winter duds.  Cabo, as it is often called, fills the bill perfectly.

I hadn’t been there in years, but found a recent trip with a group of friends absolutely perfect.

Some of the folks in our group golfed, of course.  How could you not if you were a golfer?

A classic spot to have a casual dinner is a restaurant called “The Office.”  There’s a whole funny story about it.  Evidently during the 1970s when the Baja was remote and isolated, this was the first palapa on the beach serving simple food and drinks.   A local character rented wind and surf equipment and entertained clients there.  Soon it was referred to by him as “the office.”

The name suck and soon a blue sign with yellow lettering popped up and it became official.   The Office on the beach.

We didn’t do any work there instead sat  at our table right on the beach with our feet in the sand.  We enjoyed  the views of the activity on the water and the endless margaritas.   It is a “must do” place when you go to Cabo.

The Office

A terrific farm to table restaurant in Todos Santos, a nearby town and home of the famed Hotel California was a highlight.  Great food to enjoy.  And then shopping in the quaint shops afterwards.

We did the obligatory sunset cruise.  I especially enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of boats in the water off the tip of the Baja Peninsula.  We were a little late for the whale watching.  Mot of the whales had headed to their northern homes near Alaska.  Cruising by the iconic rock is a must.

One of my favorite nights was the weekly Thursday night Art Walk in the neighboring town of San Jose del Cabo.  Galleries, stores and restaurant are all open late and welcome the tourists.  It was fun.  It’s all in the old part of town.

I especially enjoyed the performances by the children in the town square.  They seemed so full of joy.  I’ll go back just to see them.
