On a recent visit to Charleston, South Carolina we had the amazing feeling of stepping back in time. The southern architecture, with its distinct pastel colors, open piazzas, detailed wrought iron and faux stone walls are totally unique. The skyline of steeples and river harbor, bustling with schooners and sailboats add to a one-of-a-kind view.
To see a bit of the old town we took the traditional carriage ride. We were assured that the horses are well cared for, even in the heat. Your route, along cobblestone streets is chosen by a lottery, as only 20 carriages can be in one of the 3 zones at any given time. Our tour included beautiful old homes built post-civil war. Peeking into the side of these unique homes you see perfectly planted, magical gardens tucked into small space…maybe even a wedding! Open piazzas face south or west to catch the breezes. Most are only one room deep. I wanted to go back for the other two routes!
We took a pedicab to find incredible restaurants, where oysters were chandeliers, and the food was too beautiful to eat. We never get tired of shrimp and grits or fried green tomatoes and shrimp. The options are endless. Our driver was a mini tour guide and showed us a bit of the city on the way.
As a ‘fun” artist, I like to discover local art. In the low country, painting oyster shells to be a booming business. Shells are readily available, just order a dozen on the half shell for dinner and you have your canvas. To get the idea, I painted some small watercolors to capture the moment. You can paint anything in a ready-made ring or card holder. Such a fun idea.
Go enjoy this piece of living history, you won’t be sorry.
