I was really blown away with the beauty of the Bay of Montenegro. I visited this part of the world on a photography trip last September. Wow. It is fantastic.
Where is it? Just south of Croatia on the Adriatic Sea. Croatia gets a lot of attention because of Game of Thrones filming and all the wonderful islands, but Montenegro shouldn’t be overlooked.
The Bay itself is actually two large bodies of water connected with a small channel surrounded by huge mountains. Really stunning.
The City of Kotor has been a pretty safe place to live, nested in the back bay in a wonderfully protected area. Invaders had a tough time getting through those bodies of water without being spotted. Going over the mountains was tough as well.
Kotor is a walled city which created even more protection.
Like many old walled cities around the world, it is now a tourist destination with much to see.
I enjoyed the old Catholic Church on the main square. We also peeked inside an Orthodox Christian Church nearby.
The sea captains gained great wealth during the 1600’s and built large homes called Palaces in Kotor. Now most of them are shops or hotels.
We climbed up the side of the mountain to look over the town. I loved the pattern of the red roofs. This area was controlled by the Venetians for 400 years influencing architecture.
Like many ports, cruise ships like to stop here. We were told that there can be four at a time in the area.
When I wandered the old city I spotted some colorful spots—a coffee plaza, painted fish on stone benches. Loved the cat using a table leg for a pillow. Ahhhhhh. What a life.
A highlight of the experience in Montenegro was taking a small boat out into the bay and circling an island church taking pictures. That’s what we happily enjoy doing on a photo tour. We were thrilled with the storm that came up while we were out on the water. Nothing like some strong clouds to add atmosphere to an already beautiful setting for photography.
Fortunately we got off the boat to enjoy a lovely dinner before the rain began.
The tour was organized by Fantastic Photo Tours.
