We are not snowbirds; going south for us is not an option for many reasons. So, we keep up our spirits and enjoy winter in Grand Rapids, Michigan! I find fun things to do that do not break the bank and keep us from going into a deep freeze both physically and mentally.
Here are my top 10 activities from last winter. I must admit these are tailored for a retiree who loves the arts.
-
Attend any music event offered by St. Cecilia Music Center. This is the oldest performing arts center in the region and brings the best in Jazz, Folk and Chamber music. Pair it with dinner with friends first to add to the perfect event.
-
Make a new wreath for your front door or try making a turkey tray! These ideas were both found on the internet. Even if you are not crafty, try it.
-
Go to a benefit for a local non-profit. We attended one for the Grand Rapids Opera. We learned about the artists, musicians, and the music. I also learned I do not like Wagner!
-
Go to an art show. I love the West Michigan Potter’s Guild show each fall and winter. This could also be a car, garden, or a cat show. It doesn’t matter, just go pique your curiosity.
-
Go to a local school’s musical performance. We saw “Peter Pan” at a nearby high school. Watching these young actors take the stage with so much talent is amazing. This could be spelling bee, a science exhibit, or sports event. It’s a wonderful time to support the future.
-
Visit a greenhouse. Smell the dirt, see greenery, and remember winter won’t last forever. See #8.
-
Visit Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. Every Tuesday in Jan. they have a special musical performance in the grand lobby. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy dueling pianos, country, jazz, ballet and more.
-
Go to Meijer Garden to see the Butterfly Exhibit. The Conservatory blooms with flowers and the largest tropical butterfly exhibit in the U. S. This is enjoyment for all ages. Think Spring!
-
Splurge and go to an event at Van Andel Arena. Go with 8,000 like-minded friends to a concert with an artist you enjoy. Being at a live event is energizing.
-
Take a class at a local community center. I love Indian food, so I signed up to take an Indian cooking class. I learned about the cuisine and to appreciate how it is prepared. Made new friends and laughed a lot!
Not all these ideas are for everyone. I love new experiences, new places, meeting new people and enjoying it all with friends. We need inspiration, so check out what is going on not just in the world but what is happening in your own backyard.
