I had never heard of a minority group called the “Peranakan” until I went Singapore last winter. It is a group of people who are mixed Malaysian and Chinese, with a very strong presence in the fascinating city state called Singapore.
I learned about them on a lovely tour given by Tribe Tours, a company in Singapore who offer unusual tours, going beyond on the Gardens and must see sights. I was amused with fact they offer an Instagram tour taking people to the best spots to do selfies.
That didn’t interest me, but learning about the Peranakan people did so I signed us up for private tour.
We learned that Peranakan refers to a specific cultural group, primarily found in Southeast Asia, particularly in regions like Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. They are descendants of Chinese immigrants who settled in these areas between the 15th and 18th centuries, intermarrying with local populations and developing a unique culture that blends Chinese and Malay/Indonesian influences.
I loved the colorful housing, with many decorative elements. These homes are often distinguished by their narrow frontages, ornate facades, and intricate tile work.
These Buddhist monks walking by is a typical of the area now. It is quite diverse, our guide said.
He took us to a private museum. This is one you have to set up the appointment ahead of time. As you can imagine I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the dishes, furniture, clothes and embroidery pieces designed for the delicate slippers the elegant ladies wore.
We wandered the neighborhood now turned trendy
I love the street art, adding so much to an urban area.
The residents must love pets. I spotted several stores dedicated to them.
This is a typical house when the Penankans became quite wealthy.
Afterwards this part of the tour we went to a Hawker Center, something Singapore is famous for. These food courts of many small stalls often are built near markets and are popular even with locals for a cheap lunch.
We thoroughly enjoyed lunch there and I love meandering around trying to capture the ambiance and people. It was crowded and tough lighting for me but here are a few images to enjoy.
Hawker Centers are gathering places.
I’d highly recommend you pop into one if you get to Singapore.
