In My Backyard: Summer Fun

A lot of people ask me if I miss traveling.  Of course I do.  Shoot.  Most of us do.  The Pandemic has changed our lives in so many ways and right now, hopping on a plane and heading off to exotic points is not on the agenda.

Instead, exploring the destinations around me here in Western Michigan has been fun and frankly, surprising.

I have found I can enjoy myself close at home.

For example, a day in Grand Haven, MI brought some interesting sights.  Cute boats in the channel.  I think the cocktail boat looks like fun in fact, I might signup for an adventure on it with friends.

Having a Pronto Pup is essential at least once a season even if it isn’t very healthy.  I laughed when I saw a small stand on the board walk selling Hawaiian ice treats.  How goofy.  It drew a happy crowd on a very hot day.

And there’s always an opportunity for some creative photography.  “Keep your eyes open” I’m always told in  the photography workshops I like to take. Here I explored the option of a self portrait reflected in a curved shaped glass on a building on the boardwalk. I tried it with both my cameras.   What do you think?

Another great spot to visit along the Lake Michigan shoreline is Saugatuck.  While the once artsy town has gotten pretty touristy, it is possible to have a good time.  And there are some funny stuff to look at in the shops on the streets.

I appreciate the flowers and the yard sculptures.   People go all out.  It’s worth strolling on the side streets away from the main shopping area to see the residents’ efforts.

I never tire of a little shopping.  A recent trip revealed several stores I hadn’t visited before like one devoted to items from Africa.  It was a bit like taking a trip exploring the many treasures for sale.

Another great find was a shop selling Japanese style arrangements.  Tucked along a back street was the French shop operated by a man who divides his time between Saugatuck and Paris.  What a life.

Hungry?  How about a grilled cheese sandwich?

If you go, take time to notice all the chairs on the sidewalks for just relaxing a bit. It’s really a welcoming amenity that you don’t see very often.  They are colorful and creative.

Saugatuck is another place for keeping your eyes open.  Look up. Look down. You just never know what you’ll see.

Somehow always the same with something always new to see. There is some comfort in familiarity accompanied by a fresh takeaway.
    Thanks, Susan.
