Toronto Abstract Architecture

Reflections in the pool at Aga Kahn Museum

When I posted a few images on social media about my trip to Toronto last September, I got great suggestions like “I hope you visit Kensington Market or the Distillery District.”

They sounded terrific but my trip had a  different focus.  I was on an Abstract Architecture Photography Tour with Angie McMonigal.   Her Link is here.

Abstract photography means that when you look at the image you can’t tell where it comes from.  There’s no context.

It’s really fun to do.

The trip was pretty cool.  Yep, I did capture some traditional images.  A tall steeple.   Galleria.   A Mural.   Old City Hall.

But mostly we went places to find opportunities to create art with our cameras.  For example at Aga Kahn Museum we were entranced with a blue stairwell,  the ceiling of the auditorium and a sky light in the Members Lounge.

I was entranced with a sculpture at the entrance and the reflections in the ponds.

Another challenge was a bridge between two buildings in downtown Toronto at the Eaton Centre.  Here’s what it looks like and the abstract I created.

And then you can’t go to Toronto to look at architecture without going to the AGO museum to see the Frank Gehry staircase.

Double exposure

I was enthralled with all the reflections in the big buildings in Toronto.  Endless and endlessly changing.

I experimented a bit with in-camera double exposures of buildings and  a man

doing Tai Chi in the park.

Oh there’s more and more.  We captured images for three straight days.  So much fun.  I’d go back.   I’d also love to do some of the more traditional activities like the markets and the entertainment districts.  I’ll let you know what they are like, if I do.
