Scenes of Halloween and Dia de Muertos

Halloween is such a crazy time.  People go nuts decorating their homes, yards, and themselves.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Americans are expected to spend more this Halloween than any other year — $10.14 billion, up from $8.05 billion in 2020.

It has an interesting history.  Originally a Celtic Pagan tradition of feasting after the harvest season, it has morphed over the centuries into the American Capitalism Success Story that it is today.

It is fun.  Recently I went to a family halloween party with two of my grand children and another child.  One of the traditions is a spooky house in the basement of the 80 plus year old building where the party is held every year. .  Once a year, the staff transforms the warren of old rooms, pathways and places for wine storage into a special treat for the children.

The six year old absolutely wouldn’t go down there.  Said it was just too scary for him.  Meanwhile the two ten-year-old girls headed off with glee.

It is meant to be scary and that is a big part of the Halloween tradition.

Fundamentally,  it is a holiday where we celebrate our fears of the unknown, a time to sit between this world and the one beyond.

Happy Halloween

And a Joyous Day of the Dead

Not only is Halloween a big part of the end of October, but Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is also important.  On November 1 and 2, folks of Hispanic origins practice what I think is a wonderful celebration of the loved ones who are no longer with us.

I learned on a podcast recently that this holiday actually has roots in the Celtic tradition as well.

I was fortunate to experience Dia de Muertos  in San Miguel Mexico a couple of yers ago. It was fascinating to see the authentic versions and the one that has evolved over time for the tourists.  I loved them both.

I love seeing the children at Halloween. What fun they have dressing up and pretending to be someone or something else.  Parading at school.  Trick or treating in the neighborhood bringing joy to our lives.
